Bedroom Closet Organization

I have too many clothes.

That's it.

Plain and simple.

I try to get rid of the things that I don't wear, but I always talk myself out of it.  My weight fluctuates pretty easily between 2 sizes.  I don't want to get rid of anything that may will fit me in the future.

I have, however, started a new procedure.  For every new piece of clothing I buy, I have to get rid of a piece of clothing.  This has helped.

Now don't judge, but I have 2 closets.  (Okay, so its really two and a half, but that half of a closet is in a storage room and just holds dresses and winter coats during the summer.  So that doesn't count.  Two.  I only have two closets.)  One closet is in my bedroom and the other is in the bathroom.  I know its weird to have a clothes closet in the bathroom, but it wasn't being used so I made it functional for me.

Here is the before picture.  You may judge, it is pretty bad.

The top was for shirts and the bottom for pants.  This didn't work.  The shirts were so compacted in that I couldn't hardly get anything out.  (notice how close the hanger are to each other)
The pants annoyed me because they were stretching out my cheap hangers.  We know I am thrifty, I am not going to buy new hangers, so this isn't going to work for me.

The shelf on the top was piled with junk as were the shelves to the right.  There was also junk on the floor.

There were some shirts hanging up on the bottom right because they wouldn't fit where they belonged.  Not to mention the basket full of clothes that needed to be hung, but had no place to go.

And lastly, the thing that drove me nuts was that I had 28 (probably an exaggeration) different colors of hangers.  Not working for me either.

(Sorry for the chair in the way, I should have moved that.)

Now in most people's mind, the logical thing would be to get rid of some clothes.
NO WAY!
I prefer spending hours reorganizing.  :)

............

So here is what I did.

First I cleaned out all the junk.  Some went in the trash and other stuff found more practical places to live.
I moved all my tank top-like shirts to the top.  These all got white hangers.  Look how pretty.  Sometime, I open my closet and stare at those pretty white hangers, it calms me.
(Yeah, that sounds a little crazy.)

I moved all my short sleeve-like shirts to the bottom.  Now I didn't have enough hangers to do all the same color, but that didn't stop me from ordering the colors I did have.

I decided that pants on cheap hangers don't work for me.  I folded them and put them on the shelves on the right side of my closet.

The top little shelf is for black pants (left) and other dress pants (right).

The second little shelf is for jeans (left) and capris short pants (right).
(How the heck do you spell that word?  It doesn't look correct.)

The third little shelf is for skirts.  Print on the left and solid on the right.

Under the little shelves is a small white trash can that I put my extra hangers in.  When I am doing laundry, I take it with me and then put it back.  It's also handy when getting dressed; in the morning I just put my hangers in there.

On the top shelf of the closet is a basket and a little box.  The basket is kind of a catch-all type of thing.  The little box is were I hid candy from myself.
Note to Self:  Forget That!

The Finished Product:

Side-By-Side View

                             Before                                     After

My long sleeve shirts, coats, and some dresses are in my second closet.  I'll save that for another day.  It's kind of a disaster at the moment.

  6. Just stopping by from Anti-Procrastination Tuesday (which is perfect, because it's now Thursday)! Your closet looks great - I love the rainbow-hanger effect, and can see how tidy it looks with the pants moved elsehwere.
Kansas must be something special. My best friend is from there (and darn it, she moved BACK there), and another blogger I love to read is there, too. Thanks for brightening my day. Oh, and I love the name of your blog.

  8. Installing a custom closet organizers is a brilliant idea of adding more closet space without actually eating up more footprint in the house. There are many closet organizer systems and tools and you should be very sure of what you want before you even begin installing the rods and boxes and any other closet organizing tools.
